USPS will maintain operations at Buffalo facility after proposed move to Rochester
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- The United States Postal Service announced it will maintain business as usual at its William Street facility in Buffalo after a proposal that would have moved operations at the center to Rochester.
The USPS said in a statement that after the finalization of a Mail Processing Facility Review, "There will be no changes at the Buffalo facility. ... Business mail entry, Post Office, station, branch retail services and delivery services will remain unchanged."
The proposal to move, and later consolidate, operations to Rochester was met with stark opposition from postal workers as well as local and state leaders. The USPS held a public meeting in February regarding the potential move where workers' voices could be heard.
The William Street facility processes 30,000 letters per hour, and the proposed move would have caused delays to mail across Western New York. Additionally, hundreds of employees faced the threat of relocation to Rochester.
Senator Chuck Schumer was one of many politicians who pushed back against the proposal, and said in a release Friday that "Today is a massive win for Western New Yorkers that will ensure more efficient mail delivery for the region’s seniors, families, and businesses."
"Our hardworking postal workers work day in and day out to deliver high-quality mail service throughout Western NY, and USPS’s planned transfer of operations for the Buffalo’s William Street Postal Facility put our local mail service and dedicated postal workers’ jobs at risk," Schumer said.
