‘Clubs aren’t obliged’ – Postecoglou doesn’t seem keen on Cristian Romero’s Olympic dream
Ange Postecoglou doesn’t sound keen on the idea of Cristian Romero playing for Argentina at the Olympics in the summer, with Tottenham having the option to deny such a call-up.
With the Euros and Copa America on the horizon for a lot of Tottenham’s squad, Postecoglou is keen for his players to at least get some rest under their belts ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Tottenham Hotspur face Luton Town this weekend in the Premier League as they look to close the gap on Champions League rivals, Aston Villa, in fourth. With Micky Van de Ven returning from injury, we could see the return of his dynamic partnership with Cristian Romero.
The Lilywhites were battered 3-0 away at Fulham last time out and fans have been waiting a long two weeks to see Ange Postecoglou’s side back in action, thanks to the international break.
Luton Town are without a win in their last five Premier League matches but have been a consistent thorn in the side of the big teams so far this season.
In fact, Spurs only just scraped a win at Kenilworth Road earlier in the campaign thanks to a Micky Van de Ven poach, after Yves Bissouma was shown a second yellow card for diving.
Cristian Romero wants to go to the Olympics
Romero told TyC Sports earlier this week: “I would like to be in the Olympic Games. I never had the chance to be there. Anything for the national team, obviously I would like to be there. If [Javier] Mascherano wants to take me, I am available.”
When asked about Cristian Romero wanting to play for Argentina at the Olympics, Postecoglou said (Football London): “Yeah, look with all those things, the Olympics is a little bit of a different issue because clubs aren’t obliged to release players. Certainly as a club we’ll make sure there is a balance there.
“My advice would be with the Copa America and hopefully us gearing up for a big season, rest would be the better policy.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I can understand why players would want the chance to win an Olympic gold medal and if Romero really wants to go, I wouldn’t deny him that chance. However, a sensible conversation is needed because rest would perhaps be a better idea for the centre-back.
