WHEN it comes to maximizing the look of any sized room, sometimes it’s the smallest of tips that can make the biggest difference.

Her advice for almost every room in your home – as well as the outside of it – will instantly add square footage to your space.

Professional home stager and CEO of Moving Mountains Design, Michelle Minch, shares the insider knowledge she regularly gives realtors and homeowners.

According to Minch, the most important space-making magic happens in the bedroom.

She advises “placing the bed on the wall furthest from the door.”

The room will also feel even larger if you are actually able to walk around the bed.

That might require downsizing from a king to a queen, or a queen to a double, but it will all be worth it once your room gets that ‘wow’ factor.

Too much clutter can also close in an area.

Instead, she advises displaying only three to five items, such as a trophy or other knickknack, in a room or on a shelf.

Selling, storing, or pre-packing the rest of your things are her top tips, especially if you are selling your home.

When it comes to furniture, less is more if you want to give the appearance of more space.

For example, one larger piece, such as a dresser or bureau, is better than two or more smaller versions.

It’s also all about size – at least when it comes to space.

Minch recommends using “appropriately sized” furniture.

For instance, a large sofa in a living area will only draw more attention to how small a room really is.

To give the illusion of a bigger room, sometimes it’s best to give your wall some space.

By pulling furniture away from the wall, everything will seem much more open and therefore larger.

You can even create a “cozy” sitting area, such as in front of a fireplace, with room to move around the back of the furniture instead.

Painting tips can also make things pop.

Since cooler colors recede, using shades such as pale blues, as well as greens and grays, will make a room feel roomier.

You can even add some curb appeal by adding a lighter color to the outside of your home.

Just sit back and watch as your pad gets bigger with a coat of paint.
