WFP: Over one million women in Afghanistan malnourished last year
The U.N. World Food Programme revealed that 1.2 million women in Afghanistan were malnourished last year, the organization announced on Thursday.
Mona Sheikh, Head of Nutrition at the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, said in a video posted on the organization’s account on its social media platform X, this year, expects this number to rise.
Shaikh also mentioned that the number of malnourished children is expected to reach 3 million this year. However, WFP will only be able to assist 1.6 million of them.
WFP highlighted a concerning trend: following cuts in foreign assistance last year, there was an increase in children’s admissions to malnutrition clinics in Afghanistan.
According to the United Nations, more than 23 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance this year. Among them, over half are children.
Since the Taliban assumed power, Afghanistan has plunged into a severe humanitarian crisis, compounding existing challenges. The instability and limited access to necessities have intensified widespread suffering, especially among women and children.
Additionally, the decrease in funding from international bodies has greatly impeded relief operations, leaving millions vulnerable to famine and depriving them of crucial aid, thus exacerbating the country’s humanitarian plight.
