I’m stunned after finding out what ASOS really stands for – I’ve had it wrong for years and feel majorly humbled
FOR fashionistas across the country, ASOS is one of the top online stops if you’re looking for a new outfit.
The retailer launced in 2020 selling items and clothing which had been sported by celebrities.
But ASOS quickly put its own stamp on fashion by launching its own brand which was sold alongside other labels on the website.
Its creations were a huge success, with Rihanna and Michelle Obama both snapping up pieces from the collection.
From there, the company quicky became a global fashion and beauty powerhouse.
If you’ve only been aware of the company or shopping there since 2002, you will only know it by the snappy acronym ASOS.
It rebranded in the noughties to target twenty-something fashionistas.
But before then, the company name actually stood for “as seen on screen”.
And some loyal customers are not happy after realising they have had it wrong for years.
Fashion influencer Jilly Cross, from Glasgow, said: “I, for my whole entire adult life, thought that ASOS stood for ‘as seen on stars’.
“Then a lot of you humbled me and said it’s actually ‘as seen on screen’.
“That really f***ed up my day because I hate being wrong.”
It turns out Jilly isn’t alone, as her fellow fashion fans admitted they also thought it stood for ‘as seen on stars’.
One said: “Totally with you on ASOS, In my head it’s always been as seen on stars, never heard of as seen on screen.”
A second insisted: “It was definitely as seen on stars! They had all the celeb photos on each item.”
A third added: “I would have put money on it being ‘as seen on stars’.”
Meanwhile, a fourth exclaimed: “Whaaaaaat? It is as seen on stars and I will die on this hill.”
