However, one woman shared how she found her perfect gown in a charity shop for just £13 and people are in awe.

Taking to Reddit, the savvy bride shared a photo of the dress that she managed to find secondhand.

She wrote: “$17 (£13) thrifted Dress = Good News for Wedding Budget.”

The beautiful white dress had an A-line skirt and fell to the ground, with a scooped neckline and small capped sleeves.

She continued: “My fiancé and I are trying to keep our wedding costs as low as possible, and have felt like $10k (£7.9k) was impossible lately. 

“But! In the past week I found this $17 (£13) dress and a surprisingly affordable venue that fits our vision (an indoor/outdoor restaurant with a ceremony site, $750 (£597) site fee + $3k (£2.7k)food/bev minimum).

“I’m feeling like an affordable wedding is possible again, after going through what felt like endless looping of wedding planning, being disappointed about costs, then considering elopement, then being disappointed about leaving out family…woo!”

Wedding dresses can be extremely expensive, with figures from Bridebook showing that in 2024, their average cost is £1,300 – so the bride found a real bargain.

The classic-looking gown seemed to be a big hit with people online, who rushed to praise her purse-friendly find.

One person wrote: “Wow, that dress is a steal.”

Another added: “that’s cute! you could add a belt for some pizazz if you wanted! Either bling or a wedding colour.”

And a third commented: “Gorgeous! Elegant in its simplicity. Please don’t add a belt! Maybe a lovely cape or something like that, but this dress is great as is.”

According to a recent survey by Hitched.co.uk, the average cost of a wedding in the UK in 2023 was a whopping £20,000.

Many brides choose to buy their dresses second hand to save money, but we previously shared how one woman has gone even further with her budgeting plans.

Taking to Mumsnet, the bride-to-be queried whether it would be OK for her to ask a friend if she could borrow their wedding dress.

The woman’s query has divided opinion, with some people arguing that since they had spent so much money on the dress, they would not want to share it.
