Louisiana organizations gather at the Capitol for Lobby Day
LOUISIANA (KLFY) -- Louisiana organizations traveled to the Capitol building today for the Annual Lobby Day, for their chance to meet with lawmakers about what laws they support and the ones they do not.
Acadiana organizations like A New Chapter Push showed up as part of The Power Coalition for Equity and Justice organization.
"We brought some students with us," founder of A New Chapter Push Rev. Wilfred Johnson said. "They are out of school. We bought some other people that had an interest in wanting to know what goes on here at the state capitol. It's a learning deal for all of us. And everybody gets something no matter what."
The annual event allows organizations to come together and meet with elected officials in charge of the laws being pushed in both the Senate and House. Many groups there said Lobby Day is not just about building a relationship with legislators, but also holding them accountable as well.
Morgan Shannon with Power Coalition said it is hard to meet with officials and discuss bills being pushed. Lobby Day gives organizations the opportunity to do so.
"This is a time to chime in and just lower the transaction cost of people being able to interact with their elected official," Shannon said. "Oftentimes they get their vote and then you never hear from them again, but they're here. To be able to represent you and your interests and what is important for the state of Louisiana."
