International Amnesty calls for halt to Afghan migrant expulsion from Pakistan
The International Amnesty Organization has demanded the halt of Afghan migrants’ expulsion by the Pakistani government, stating, “Pakistan must desist from ignoring global requests to cease the unlawful deportation of Afghan refugees.”
The organization, on Thursday, in a statement citing an immigration rights advocate, wrote that Pakistan’s decision to intensify the expulsion of Afghan migrants illegally contradicts international human rights laws and jeopardizes their lives.
James Jenin, an immigration rights advocate, added, “The callous disregard of Pakistani authorities for harassment and persecution, a serious violation of human rights, and the humanitarian disaster awaiting them if Afghan refugees are expelled to Afghanistan under the control of the Taliban regime, is heartbreaking.”
The organization added that the new elected government in Pakistan has emphasized the intensification of the expulsion of illegal Afghan migrants and intends to extend this process after Ramadan.
According to this human rights organization, the lives of 800,000 Afghan migrants are seriously endangered by Pakistan’s new decision during the month of Ramadan.
The decision to expel undocumented Afghan migrants was made in October 2023 when thousands of Afghan refugees sought shelter in Pakistan following the collapse of the previous regime.
In the International Amnesty Organization’s statement, it was further added, “We urge Pakistani authorities to immediately revoke these decisions and promptly enact laws in line with human rights to protect the rights of refugees in the country.”
Last year, the Pakistani government issued orders for the expulsion of over a million undocumented Afghan migrants and set a one-month deadline. It is worth noting that about half of these migrants have returned to Afghanistan.
