4/4/2024: Messy winter storm in full swing

The latest Storm Tracker Forecast from meteorologist Matt Mackie:

Most areas have completed a transition from wintry mix to snow this morning - even so, some will wind up with far more on the ground than others!

With temperatures struggling to get down to freeing in the core of the Capital District, most have a just slushy coating on the roads. Meanwhile, the hills and mountains have several inches. Widespread, steady snow continues through this morning.

After lunchtime, we expect things to break apart along and south of I-90. Some may see periods of dry weather. When the scattered showers are falling in the Capital District, they may change back to wintry mix or even rain as temperatures inch further above freezing.

Meanwhile, snow could linger well into this evening up towards the north, especially in the higher terrain.

That will allow for higher totals - favored locations in the eastern Adirondacks and along the spine of the Green Mountains may see over a foot of snow. Meanwhile, expect only 1 to 3 inches along and just east of the Hudson River.

Winds were incredibly strong in some spots yesterday, with gusts near 70 miles per hour in parts of the Berkshires! Some in the Mohawk Valley topper 60 miles per hour as well. That has led to thousands of power outages, especially just east of the Capital District.

While it's still blustery in spots this morning, winds are nowhere near as intense as they were last night. The High Wind Warning that's up for Bennington, northern Berkshire, and eastern Rensselaer counties is set to expire at 10 AM.

Lingering rain or snow showers tomorrow and (to a lesser extent) on Saturday, with breezy conditions and highs in the mid to upper 40's. Sunday looks better with some sun and highs in the low 50's.

We're still on track for good viewing of the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday afternoon - most data supports our forecast of mostly sunny skies. Keep your fingers crossed! We'll also be much warmer for those first couple days of the work week, with highs in the low 60;s.
