Drummond announces initiative to hold airlines responsible

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Attorney General Drummond has announced a new initiative that will give him the authority to investigate complaints from customers regarding actions concerning airline carriers and ticket agents.

After the level of consumer complaints have recently risen against airline carriers which includes flight disruptions, lack of refunds, and lost or delayed baggage, Drummond feels it is time to take action.

Drummond acknowledged that there is a need in the efforts to protect customers against airlines and ticket agents. Recently signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to review and resolve complaints filed and to identify violations of federal aviation consumer protection requirements.

“I am unwavering in my commitment protecting the rights of air travelers and holding accountable any airline that is found to have engaged in deceptive or prohibited conduct,” he said. “The people of Oklahoma should know that your complaints will not fall on the deaf ears of a sprawling federal government. I am personally committed to ensuring all airline passengers are treated fairly and in full compliance with the law.”

Before putting the recent MOU into action, Drummond has urged that the federal government strengthen its protection towards airline passengers and asked Congress to give authorization to state attorneys general enforcement of the federal consumer protection laws that govern the airline industry.

The recently signed MOU will go for two years but Oklahoma and DOT could agree to extend it through two-year intervals once the agreement reaches its end mark.

The MOU states that customers that book their airline tickets deserve to be treated fairly, to know exactly what they are buying, and to get what they pay for.
