Ní Riain Strikes Gold on Day Two of Europeans
Róisín Ní Riain was crowned European Champion on day two of the 2024 European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal. Ní Riain, who was the only Irish swimmer in action yesterday, swam a personal best (1:18.00) on her way to first place in the 100 Breaststroke SB13 Final.
The Limerick girl, fresh from her silver medal win in the 100 Butterfly S13 Final the previous night, was back on the blocks to compete in the 100 Breaststroke SB13 Final in the Funchal Olympic Swimming Pool Complex.
Ní Riain faced stiff competition in a packed field heading into the final, she was second fastest off the blocks to then power home to claim the top spot on the podium. Her closest competitor, Spaniard Marian Polo Lopez was nearly a full second behind in second place (1.18.97).
Speaking after her gold medal winning performance, the National Centre (Limerick) swimmer said: “That was a pretty good swim, happy with the time and a great race. I always think the hundred breaststroke is a fun one for me just to get out and race. I love the event so I’m very pleased with that.”
Day three is another busy day in the pool with four Irish swimmers set to compete. Nicole Turner (NAC) and Barry McClements (National Centre Ulster) will make their first appearances at this Championships in the morning session and will hope to progress to finals in their respective events. Dearbhaile Brady (Limavady) will also look to progress to her second final in the 200 IM event.
Deaten Registe (Lisburn) will make his European Championships debut in the evening session. He has a direct final in the 100m Breaststroke at 17:57.
