My laundry hack removes tough grease stains from my husband’s work shirts – I rely on a $1 school buy, it never fails
A LAUNDRY pro has shared the DIY method she uses to remove stubborn stains from clothes.
She demonstrated the simple trick on her husband’s oil-splattered work shirt.
In her viral post, the Reddit user who goes by @Prophy_wife explained each step of her cleaning process.
First, she documented what her husband’s uniform looked like before she tackled the oil stains.
The housewife then used white chalk to draw on each of the stubborn oil stains.
She recommended using sidewalk chalk, such as the 99c Crayola 12-pack from Target.
“It helps absorb the stains,” she explained to her fellow Reddit users.
“You’ll notice there are more chalk marks than actual stains in the first picture, this is because I could slightly see some stains that just didn’t show up in photos.”
Once she had covered each of the oil stains in chalk she moved on to the next step.
“Add Dawn dish soap on top of the stains after placing the chalk over them,” she wrote.
“Let this sit for about five to 10 minutes depending on the saturation of the stain.”
After allowing the chalk and dish soap to set in, she moved on to the final step.
“Toss it into the washing machine with other clothes as normal,” she said.
The Redditor showed her followers a side-by-side comparison of the shirt before and after carrying out her hack.
She described herself as “very happy with the results.”
“I’ve been using this method for these types of stains for 11 plus years and it always works with multiple different types of washing machines and different laundry detergents,” she said.
She added that her water softener helps the process without using too much detergent.
Tips to remove yellow sweat stains
Yellow armpit stains affects everyone, whether people care to admit to it or not. But there is help at hand. To remove yellow stains from your clothing, experts recommend the following methods:
- Baking soda paste: The pros at The Laundry Cafe recommend mixing one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with one tablespoon of salt, and ½ cup of baking soda. Apply directly to the stain with a toothbrush, rub, and let the mixture sit for at least an hour, then wash as normal.
- Oxygen bleach: This method is just as useful for removing yellow stains. Mix one part of oxygen-based bleach with one part of ammonia in a non-metal bowl. Wear gloves during this application. Rub into the fabric with a toothbrush and allow the solution to sit for at least ten minutes before laundering as normal.
- Stain remover or detergent: Stains on collars can be stubborn to remove as armpit stains. So pretreat the area using a solvent-based stain-removing agent or detergent. Work the product into the collar with a toothbrush and allow it to sit for at least ten minutes before washing.
“Any detergent or washer should be able to handle this kind of stain,” she said.
Reddit users shared their own DIY laundry methods in the comments section.
“I do something similar but I make a paste with baking soda and dish soap. I think the baking soda works in the same way as the chalk,” wrote one reader.
“Baby powder over the grease stain for a couple of hours and then wash as normal is what my grandma showed me as a kid,” said another person.
“Enzyme detergents also can work super well for oil-based stains too!!!” suggested one Reddit user.
