This Is Happening in America
Saturday
A super great day. I awakened and looked at my swimming pool. It was a miracle. The icky green spots are gone, gone, gone, and it’s a perfect aqua blue. There is not a cloud in the sky. I swam in my pool. For some reason, I was reminded of how I used to take the IRT subway from Brooklyn Heights to 22 Cortlandt Street. There, I toiled on the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal.
It was the dreariest office space I had ever seen. But I worked under a famous and great man, Bob Bartley, editorial page editor of the WSJ. He and I often took the same train, same car to work.
I remember well a conversation we had when Israel was fighting the Arabs and Mr. Ford was slow and grudging about helping Israel. Finally, he did the right thing. “It’s vital that the USA helps Israel,” Bob said. “Israel will win. But it shows the world we have a moral center.”
A far cry from Joe Biden.
Lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel, as always. I brought along a simply staggeringly blonde beauty whom I had met at the hotel gift shop the day before. Her name is Olivia Engler. She is a singer, songwriter, and musician. Later in the day, she took from her pocketbook a device that looks like a can of peas. But it’s a Bluetooth-enabled portable speaker from Bose.
She played about 10 of her songs. She is a breathtakingly gifted artist. She is a 25-year-old Judy Garland–like genius. I used to be around major stars when I was with the WSJ. Jagger. Lennon. She’s better than any of them. She is the most exciting singing, writing talent I have ever heard. If you miss her work, you miss an atom bomb of music.
Sunday
A day from hell. It’s one day past Hitler’s birthday. But it might as well be his birthday. My old campus at Columbia has been taken over by terrorist fans urging their audience to kill all Jews.
This is happening in America. RIGHT NOW. Mayor Adams. “President” Biden. SHAME ON YOU!!!
