Saturday sport: Ireland qualify for 2025 World Cup; Munster bag away win

GAA

Football

Armagh are through to the Ulster Senior Football Final after a narrow win over Down in Clones.

A late score from Jason Duffy saw his side triumph by the smallest of margins, ending 0-13 to 2-6.

Meanwhile, the ladies football provincial championships got underway on Saturday.

Old rivals Kerry and Cork met in Brosna, where the Kingdom took a 1-14 to 1-10 win, while Tipperary beat Waterford 4-5 to 0-11.

Hurling

In the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship, Dublin recovered from a half-time deficit to beat Carlow 1-24 to 0-22, while Antrim got an important win over Wexford earlier, beating them 2-22 to 2-20 at Corrigan Park.

In the Joe McDonagh Cup, Laois had a huge win over Meath, ending 7-29 to 1-16, while Offaly beat Westmeath 2-23 to 1-20.

Elsewhere, in the Christy Ring Cup, London beat Wicklow 2-20 to 0-14 and Kildare’s 2-19 bested Derry’s 0-18. In the 3pm game, Tyrone took a three-point win over Sligo, ending 2-17 to 2-14.

In the Nicky Rackard Cup, Mayo beat Louth and Donegal took the win over Monaghan, and in the Lory Meagher competition, Longford defeated Leitrim and Cavan beat Lancashire.

Soccer

Liverpool were looking to bounce back from Wednesday’s derby defeat to Everton as they travelled to West Ham for the lunchtime kick-off in the Premier League, but instead, it ended 2-2, with goals from Jarrod Bowen, Andrew Robertson, and OG from Aphonse Areola and the finisher from Michail Antonio.

In the 3pm kick-offs, it ended 1-1 between Manchester United and Burnley, Newcastle United took a massive 5-1 win over Sheffield United, Wolves beat Luton 2-1, and Fulham vs Crystal Palace ended level on one apiece.

Later, Everton beat Brentford 1-0 to hold on to their place in the league, and Aston Villa and Chelsea played out a 2-all draw at Villa Park after the visitors had a late winner disallowed following a VAR check.

Rugby

Women’s Six Nations

Ireland have bagged a 15-12 win over Scotland in the Women’s Six Nations, seeing them secure third despite a difficult start to the tournament.

The result also means they qualify for next year’s World Cup in England.

Earlier, Wales beat Italy 22-20, but it wasn’t enough to stop them from receiving the Wooden Spoon.

Last up was the Grand Slam decider between France and England, with the Red Roses triumphing 42-21.

URC

In the United Rugby Championship, Munster beat the Emirates Lions 33-15 in South Africa.

Leinster were less fortunate, suffering a 42-12 loss at the hands of the Stormers in Cape Town.

Last up was Connacht, who beat the Dragons 34-27.
