US State Dept emphasizes continued engagement with Kabul
During a press briefing, the spokesperson for the US State Department defended the country’s policy towards Afghanistan, stating that the US is engaging with Kabul to safeguard its national interests.
Ned Price, the spokesperson for the US State Department, told reporters yesterday, Tuesday, April 30th, that engaging with the Taliban is vital for safeguarding the national interests of the United States and the people of Afghanistan.
While defending America’s stance on engagement, he emphasized that the US embassy in Afghanistan has underscored the necessity of not granting legitimacy to the Taliban regime and maintaining a policy of engagement, which is seen as a balance between the two.
Karen Decker, a US embassy official for Afghanistan, argues in an interview with “The New Humanitarian” that given the circumstances, the US must strike a delicate balance between non-recognition policy and “practical” engagement with the Taliban.
She also mentioned the weekly meetings between US officials and Taliban authorities in Doha, the capital of Qatar, stating that isolating the Taliban would be detrimental to Afghanistan and the region.
The Taliban has ruled Afghanistan for nearly three years, and so far, no country has formally recognized the their goverment. However, the level of unofficial interaction with the group has expanded in various aspects.
