A recent reissue from Fritz Hansen, the PK4 is the latest addition to the brand’s collection of Poul Kjærholm lounge chairs. Originating in 1952, this iconic, sleek silhouette was one of Kjærholm’s earliest creations post-graduation from the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. It embodies Kjærholm’s pioneering exploration of geometry, evident in its streamlined form.
Crafted from seven tubular steel pieces seamlessly welded into a unified frame, with the back and seat fashioned from a single length of halyard, the PK4 achieves a delicate yet sculptural presence that is both striking and refined. This design exemplifies Kjærholm’s exceptional talent for distilling complex technical concepts into visually compelling and functional pieces that blur the line between architecture and furnishings.
The new iteration of the PK4 features improved structural integrity and introduces a new seat cushion, enhancing the comfort level without compromising the chair’s iconic profile. Available in satin-brushed stainless steel or black powder-coated stainless steel, with halyard options in natural or black, the PK4 harmoniously interacts with other renowned Kjærholm designs. Thomas Kjærholm, the late designer’s son, underscores the chair’s experimental nature and its connection to other seminal designs like the PK25 and PK22.
Furthermore, Kjærholm’s innovative use of tubular steel positions the PK4 within the broader mid-century design landscape, echoing the influences of figures like Mathieu Matégot and the burgeoning International Modernism movement across Central Europe.
On display in Fritz Hansen showrooms worldwide, the PK4 enriches the extensive family of Kjærholm designs manufactured by Fritz Hansen in close collaboration with the Kjærholm estate since 1982.
