Jay Leno’s Wife Offers Health Update Months After Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis, issued an update on the latter’s health on Tuesday night at the premiere of Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The update comes after news broke in January that Leno had been granted a conservatorship over his wife of 44 years after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

“I feel great,” Mavis triumphantly told Entertainment Tonight as she and Jay walked Netflix’s red carpet.

Leno told the outlet their relationship is going as strong as ever, and they’re not letting Mavis’ health concerns get in the way of them living their lives. "Well, we hang out every day," Jay said. "We have a great time. 44 years [married], so we're doing good," he added.

Of their shared date night, the former Tonight Show host joked, "Thought I'd come to something fun for a change. Everything is so controversial. Just to come to a funny, silly movie—it's great. I think people will have a great time."

Leno filed for a conservatorship over his wife in January so that he could "structure her living trust and other estate plans" in the event that he passes before she does. In legal documents obtained by ET, Mavis’ neurologist, Hart Cohen, noted that she "sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth." The documents also note that Mavis experiences "a lot of disorientation" and "ruminates about her parents who have both passed and her mother who died about 20 years ago."

Leno was ultimately granted a conservatorship over his wife. Cohen noted that Jay "loves his wife very much" and "treats [Mavis] like gold." He explained at the time that Leno wished to institute the conservatorship "out of respect to" Mavis.
