Crews respond to early morning central Topeka house fire
TOPEKA (KSNT) - An early morning house fire in central Topeka has caused an estimated loss of around $30,000.
Just after 4:30 a.m., Thursday, May 9 crews with the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) responded to a report of a house fire in the 1100 block of Southwest Medford Avenue, according to a news release from a spokeswoman with the TFD. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from a second-story window.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire and were able to keep it contained. According to the release, a single occupant was able to evacuate with their pets before crews arrived. No injuries were reported.
The TFD released the following details after investigating the fire:
- The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental; originating in the kitchen
- The total estimated loss associated with the fire is $30,000
- TFD response included 3 engine companies, 1 truck company, 1 aerial company and two battalion chiefs
- Assisting agencies include AMR, Evergy, the Kansas Gas Service and the Topeka Police Department
- Working smoke detectors were not located in the residence
