When thunderstorms are set to hit UK after ‘mini heatwave’ comes to an end

People across the UK are currently basking in some lovely warm sunshine but that is all about to change.

There is an increasing risk of thunderstorms hitting most parts of the UK on Sunday, bringing an end to the warm conditions by next week.

Alongside more rain, there’s also the chance of windy conditions on coastal areas and a drop in temperatures.

Rainfall amounts are expected to be above average for the time of year as we head into the early part of next week.

While no weather warnings are in place for thunderstorms across the UK, there are some flood alerts in place for parts of the south of England.

In the latest forecast, the Met Office says: ‘Weather conditions are expected to return to a more unsettled pattern as we head into the new working week.

‘Rain and showers will start to move in from the west, due to a developing low pressure system from the Atlantic.’

The change in the weather patterns is due to a low pressure system area that has formed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson said ‘Many places will start fine and warm on Sunday, though it is likely to become cloudier from the west or southwest during the day.

‘This will be accompanied by scattered showers, which could be heavy with thunder.

‘On Monday we’re likely to see more widespread and longer-lived spells of rain, some of which will be heavy and thundery. This will also lead to a much cooler feel to the day.’

The Met Office long range forecast also predicts that much of May is expected to be unsettled.

Into early June, conditions are expected to settle though and we can expect some sunnier conditions.

But before all that everybody is in for a treat this weekend as temperatures are expected to rise to a whopping 24°C this weekend for a ‘mini heatwave’.

If this happens Saturday will be the hottest day of the year so far, according to the Met Office.
