Report: Tottenham could battle Aston Villa for Ligue 1 star this summer
GiveMeSport have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Lille midfielder Angel Gomes but they face competition from Aston Villa, who are also keen on signing the player.
Gomes, who came through the Man Utd academy, has been a revelation since his switch to France, having been a regular in Lille’s midfielder over the last three years.
The Englishman’s reputation has continued to grow and with just one year left on his contract at Stade Pierre Mauroy, it is being suggested that he could make a big move this summer.
Spurs and Aston Villa both like Angel Gomes
GiveMeSport say that Aston Villa are now looking to lure Gomes back to the Premier League and they believe their efforts have been boosted after qualifying for the Champions League.
Unai Emery is thought to be a fan of the 23-year-old and the report says that the Spaniard has been given ‘renewed optimism’ of being able to entice the Lille star to Villa Park.
The former England Under-21 international is thought to be open to the idea of returning to his home country and it is asserted that Tottenham have also been alerted to his situation and are now considering making an offer.
The publication adds that Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund could hand Villa and Tottenham fresh competition to tempt Gomes away from Lille, with the Bundesliga club ready to offer the player a route to Germany.

One can understand why Tottenham would be plotting a move for Gomes as Postecoglou is after reinforcements in the middle of the park and the Lille star would help the North London club fulfil their homegrown quota.
However, it does appear as if other options such as Conor Gallagher and Morgan Gibbs-White rank higher on Spurs’ wishlist.
