Couple survives Hydro tornado from inside home
HYDRO, Okla. (KFOR) - There were storms all throughout the state Sunday night. Some of the damage hit the small town of Hydro where two people were hurt.
The fire chief said the town's population is about 900. The damage reports in town include downed trees and powerlines, along with a few barns damaged, and a home completely destroyed.
The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado caused the damage in Hydro.
Heather and Cole Sherman live in the house that was destroyed. They rode out the storm from inside.
The house came off the foundation and ended up across the yard. The Sherman's were inside for all of that.
"We rolled a few times. I was up there next to the couch and I just hollered for Cole, I couldn’t see," said Heather Sherman, a storm survivor.
The Sherman's relived the moments the storm destroyed their home.
"I just yelled stay down, stay down, let it pass," said Heather.
The two rode out the storm from under debris, finally crawling to safety when it passed.
"We were both alive, that was the only concern. We found each other, so we just kind of held on to each other," said Cole Sherman, a storm survivor.
The Sherman’s walked away with only cuts, bruises, and a few sprains.
Less than 24 hours later, the two said they’re still in disbelief, as they uncover what’s left of their home.
“It’s all kind of sinking in right now. Our other dog and our cat were inside and we haven’t been able to locate them yet," said Cole and Heather.
Cole breathed a sigh of relief as he found his missing wallet while our News 4 crew was at the house on Monday.
The wallet was found three feet from where Cole was laying.
It was a scary scene Sunday night and the Sherman's are grateful for their lives.
"We are lucky to be alive. The good Lord was riding with us," said Cole and Heather.
Hydro’s fire chief said the Sherman’s are the only two people hurt from the storm, other damage in town included lots of downed trees around streets and a nursing home, along with damage to a few barns.
