I’m on a Boat: Nautical Adventures Around Fox Harb’r Resort

Here are a few important things to know about the Northumberland Strait. 

First of all, it’s almost landlocked, so sea conditions are often very favourable. To the south, you have Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. To the north, Prince Edward Island. Right in the middle, it’s bisected by Confederation Bridge.

Second, there’s little to no fog in the summer. The prevailing winds are from the south, so they dry out as they pass over land. Hence, no fog in the summer. Although there may be a ghost ship. 

Third, the sun rises on the water from the east and sets in the water to the west. So that means we get beautiful sunrises and beautiful sunsets. And the best way to see it all? From a boat, of course. 

Boats, We Have Lots of Boats

There’s the pontoon boat, which is good for up to eight passengers. Pontoon cruises go up and down the shore and are a great way to see herds of harp seals or the local waterfowl. If you book as a private group, you can go swimming in the warm water too.

For birders out there, you’ll be excited to know there are hundreds of species to spot, from herons and egrets to sandpipers and dowitchers to hawks and eagles. 

Conversely, if you like to get a little wet when you’re boating, kayaks and paddle boards are great for that too. Rest assured, the Fox Harb’r Marina is a well-protected man-made harbour. Also important to note: all these activities are beginner-friendly. 

No Better Way to See the Shore

Here’s another hot tip from Captain Horner: after July 1, at the end of lobster season, there’s very little boat traffic in the Northumberland Strait. If you want to sightsee, that’s the time to do it. Sure, you can drive a car to the various lighthouses on the coast—but we’re here to tell you that it’s much more interesting to see them from the water.
