‘This one is for the sickos’ say horror fans as Demi Moore’s comeback leaves them traumatised over a vomited-up breast
DEMI Moore’s long-awaited movie comeback has left film fans horrified by its gruesome scenes, including a vomited-up breast.
The star’s film The Substance received its official premiere at the glitzy Cannes Film Festival earlier this week.
The flick, which also stars fellow ’80s movie icon Dennis Quaid, 70, received an eight-minute standing ovation on La Croisette.
But while critics were impressed, some were left traumatised by the grizzly horror, which includes gory depictions of body matter explosions and gallons of blood.
After the premiere, critic Josh Parham said: “This one is for the sickos.”
And David Ehrlich wrote: “The Substance is absolutely f****** insane and by far the best film in Competition so far. An instant body horror classic, equal parts Freaky Friday and The Fly, Demi Moore going full demented. Loved.”
Beyond Fest also gushed about the film, noting: “It is on such a freakish level that it’s impossible to believe it exists. Demi Moore goes there and @coraliefargeat has carved a contemporary horror unlike anything you’ve seen.”
61-year-old Demi’s comeback, directed by Coralie Fargeat, sees her play fading A-list actress Elisabeth Sparkle.
The film follows Elisabeth after she is given the axe from a fitness segment on a morning show.
In a similar vein to cult ’90s flick Death Becomes Her starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, she then takes an takes an experimental substance that ‘generates a new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect, you’.
Things quickly take a downward turn as a woman, played by Margaret Qualley, 29, literally bursts out of Moore in a scene of explicit nudity.
The audience is then treated to all sorts of gruesome and graphic shots which feature blood, gore and organs.
In the third act of the film, an especially horrifying scene has been reported, said to include a ‘truly monstrous, malformed creation of arms, teeth, faces, slime and flesh’, according to The Metro.
The outlet then reports a scene which features ‘boob vomiting’.
The film has faced previous criticism of depictions of the pressures that women are under to be ‘perfect’ in a skinny way.
But despite this, it currently sits with am impressive score of 92 per cent on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
The Cannes Film Festival has no shortage on controversial films as part of the official 2024 selection.
Emma Stone, 35, reunited with acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos for another graphic outing in Kinds of Kindness.
And Sebastian Stan, 41, starred in a contentious biopic about the 45th US President Donald Trump titled, The Apprentice.
