Chinese Media: China pressures Taliban to halt attacks on its interests in Pakistan

The South China Morning Post has reported that Beijing is “relying” on the Afghan Taliban to prevent attacks on its citizens on Pakistani soil.

The newspaper reported on Thursday, May 23, citing two informed sources, that Chinese diplomats in Islamabad and Kabul have been “forced” to take this step due to Pakistan’s failure to prevent the increase in attacks on Chinese citizens in that country.

According to a source in Islamabad, Chinese diplomats are “looking for alternative ways” to persuade the Taliban regime to eliminate thousands of “TTP” militants.

It has been reported that Chinese diplomats discussed Beijing’s investment in Afghanistan’s mining and electricity sectors but also raised concerns about the presence of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan.

Earlier, Pakistani journalist Nusrat Javed had also reported that Beijing asked the Taliban government in Afghanistan to expel the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan from Afghanistan into Pakistan.

Based on this report, after regaining power, the Afghan Taliban have provided safe havens to thousands of TTP members in Afghanistan.

Pakistani officials claimed that the attacker was an Afghan citizen and that the attack was planned in Afghanistan.

China manages the insecurity in the port of Gwadar in Pakistan. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which connects the two countries, is a $65 billion investment, and securing the border areas is necessary for its realization.

Meanwhile, sources say that in recent months, Pakistani officials have asked Chinese diplomats and managers to “stay away” from the country’s border areas.

Thousands of Chinese citizens are working on projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Recently, five Chinese citizens and their Pakistani driver were killed in a suicide attack in Dasu, Pakistan in late March of this year.

In a recent move, the Pakistani government announced that it would pay more than $2.5 million in compensation to the families of the Chinese citizens killed in the suicide attack.
