Report: Johan Lange actually began Tottenham’s new striker search last year
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham’s recruitment department have been crunching the numbers and scouring the market since last year for an ideal number nine for Ange Postecoglou’s system.
It is no secret that Tottenham are looking for additions to their forward line this summer, with Postecoglou himself admitting this week that strengthening in attack is a priority for the club (Beanyman Sports).
It was reported a few days ago by ESPN that the Australian had informed the club’s hierarchy that he wants a centre-forward to arrive through the door this summer, with the report adding that Richarlison could be on his way out of the club.
It remains to be seen who Spurs will go for, with the likes of Santiago Gimenez (HITC), Ivan Toney (GiveMeSport) and Serhou Guirassy (Paul O Keefe) all mooted as targets over the last couple of weeks.
Spurs striker search has been ongoing for many months
Gold has now revealed that the club’s technical director Johan Lange and chief scout Rob Mackenzie have been heavily involved in Tottenham’s search for a marquee number nine.
He says that both Mackenzie and Lange began looking for a centre-forward not long after they arrived at the North London club last year.
The journalist adds that the pair have been looking at the data to find a high-scoring striker who is the best fit to lead the line in Posteocoglou’s system.

The issue is that there are not too many high-scoring numbers nines at the top level at the moment, which means that Tottenham will have to choose between just a handful of options.
While Gimenez seems like the best stylistic fit for Ange’s system, the Mexican is unproven at the highest level and there is little evidence to suggest that he can translate his goalscoring prowess to the Premier League.
