Will ‘The Bear’ be the first show to win all 6 acting Emmys in the same year?
“The Bear” ruled the 2023 Emmys, winning Best Comedy Series and several others. It could do even better in 2024. But could it also do something unprecedented? It has a chance to win every single acting category. No show has ever gone six-for-six in performance races in a single year: both lead, both supporting and both guest.
The Emmys are in a sweeps era. It’s not uncommon for programs to not just win but dominate. “The Bear” did it last year when it claimed Best Comedy, Best Comedy Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Best Comedy Supporting Actress (Ayo Edebiri), Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Best Comedy Writing and Best Comedy Directing. But it didn’t claim every acting award. Neither did “Schitt’s Creek” in 2020; it swept the lead and supporting races, but not the guest races.
“The Crown” came ever so close in 2021. It went five-for-six. Josh O’Connor and Olivia Colman won the lead categories. Tobias Menzies and Gillian Anderson claimed supporting trophies. And Claire Foy took Best Drama Guest Actress. What prevented the show from running the board was the surprise victory by Courtney B. Vance, named Best Drama Guest Actor for “Lovecraft Country” over “The Crown’s” Charles Dance.
So what are the odds that “The Bear” can achieve the elusive clean sweep? Actually, the odds are pretty good now that you mention it. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, the series is already tipped to win five of them. White will be tough to beat for Best Comedy Actor; not only is he the reigning champ, he hasn’t lost a single major award since the show premiered. Edebiri is getting a promotion after winning Best Comedy Supporting Actress for season one; now she faces a tough battle against Jean Smart (“Hacks”) for Best Comedy Actress, but we give Edebiri the slight edge.
Another reigning champ, Moss-Bachrach, is way ahead in this year’s odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actor, and even if it doesn’t go to him, it could go to one of his co-stars like Oliver Platt or Lionel Boyce. Similarly, “The Bear” boasts the two top contenders for Best Comedy Guest Actress, Jamie Lee Curtis and Olivia Colman. And after earning a nomination last year for a brief appearance, Jon Bernthal is back and favored to win Best Comedy Guest Actor for a much meatier acting showcase in the flashback episode “Fishes.”
Five down, one to go. The only category the show isn’t favored to win is Best Comedy Supporting Actress, where its strongest bets are Golden Globe nominee Abby Elliott (ranked fourth in our odds) and Liza Colon-Zayas (ranked sixth). They have the toughest job — defeating Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”) — but if voters go all-in on the show everywhere else, there’s nothing stopping them from checking off one of the “Bear” stars here too. That happened for “The Crown” in Best Drama Supporting Actor, where Menzies was carried along by the wave of support to upset presumed front-runner Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”). When a show looks this strong, even Streep should watch her back.
