‘Further education’ – Tottenham Hotspur finally respond to Rodrigo Bentancur controversy
After the recent uproar regarding Rodrigo Bentancur’s comments about his club teammate, Heung-min Son, Tottenham Hotspur has released a statement revealing the club will be carrying out ‘further education’ for all of its players on inclusivity and diversity.
Spurs finally comment on the Bentancur and Son incident
Speaking to his national press last week, Bentancur made comments that have been interpreted as having racist undertones, as he hinted he cannot tell Heung-min Son apart from other South Koreans (Por la Camiseta via New York Times).
Bentancur took to Instagram in the aftermath to apologise to his Tottenham teammate, insisting he had made a ‘bad joke’ and did not mean any offence.
Son himself had stayed quiet on the matter in the days following, but today shared a message on his Instagram revealing he knows Bentancur made a ‘mistake’ and that the pair are ‘united’ as they head into pre-season with Spurs.
Son wrote: “I’ve spoken with Lolo. He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised.
“Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.
“We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre season to fight for the club as one.”
Tottenham to offer educational training to players
The club had not commented on the matter either, until now, with a statement explaining what they are doing to hopefully prevent anything like this happening again.
The statement reads: “Following a comment from Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apology, the Club has been providing assistance in ensuring a positive outcome on the matter. This will include further education for all players in line with our diversity, equality and inclusion objectives.
“We fully support that our captain Sonny feels that he can draw a line under the incident and that the team can focus on the new season ahead.
“We are extremely proud of our diverse, global fanbase and playing squads. Discrimination of any kind has no place at our Club, within our game or within wider society.”

I’m glad that both Sonny and the club have spoken out on this situation now and that it all appears to be resolved.
Now it’s important for everyone to move past it and trust that Bentancur knows what he did was wrong, and that it won’t happen again.
