Kevin Costner and Jewel Have a ‘Special’ Friendship
If you’ve become invested in Kevin Costner’s life since his messy divorce from Christine Baumgartner last year, you’ve probably found yourself wondering if there’s any truth to the rumor that he and Jewel are dating. On Tuesday — six months after tabloids first claimed that the two were seen being “flirty” in the Caribbean — Costner finally addressed the chatter, denying that there’s anything romantic between himself and the singer.
“Jewel and I are friends,” he told Howard Stern. “We’ve never gone out ever. She’s special, and I don’t want — I don’t want these rumors to ruin our friendship because that’s what we have.” Even while making it clear that they are not romantically involved, Costner couldn’t stop singing Jewel’s praises, saying that although she’s “beautiful and smart enough for all those things,” dating “just has never happened for us.”

Asked by Stern how the rumor began, Costner explained that back in December, he went to a fundraiser for Jewel’s organization, the Inspiring Children Foundation, on Richard Branson’s private Caribbean island. He said that he didn’t know Jewel was involved with the organization before the trip. “I’m divorced all of a sudden. I’m a single father, and he’s asked me for, you know, ten years to come down there. I said, ‘I guess I’ll go down.’”
Costner said in addition to himself and Jewel, there were several other guests on the island and on the private plane to get there. “I was on [the plane] with nine people, and I don’t want the press to ruin this for us,” he said. “I’ve had conversations with her, text-wise, and she’s so smart, and she’s been through a lot herself, and so we have a friendship. We don’t have a romance, and we’ve not dated.”
