New Delhi: Venezuela staged a remarkable comeback in their Copa America 2024 opener against Ecuador, striking twice within a span of just 10 minutes in the second half to overturn a deficit and clinch a thrilling 2-1 victory. The match, held at Levi’s Stadium in California, United States, saw Venezuela’s resilience on full display as they rallied from behind to kick off their Group B campaign with an impressive win.
Both of Venezuela’s goal came from substitute players, with Jhonder Cadiz seizing on Salomon Rondon’s deft layoff in the 64th minute, courtesy of a swiftly executed throw-in, Venezuela leveled the scores in spectacular fashion.

In the 22nd minute, Ecuador’s Enner Valencia was shown a straight red card by the referee for a late and perilous tackle on Venezuela defender Jose Martinez. However, his challenge on Martinez was deemed excessively late and dangerous. Following VAR intervention, the referee confirmed the red card decision, altering the course of the match.
Despite being a man down, La Tri showed immense spirit and took the lead on 40th minute via Jeremy Sarmiento’s stunner from outside the box.
Venezuela’s coach Fernando Batista made crucial changes after the half-time and finally enabled his team to take the advantage of their numerical superiority.
