T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa’s David Miller Gets 1 Demerit Point For Code Of Conduct Breach Against England
New Delhi: South African batter David Miller received an official reprimand for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during their thrilling Super 8 win over England in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday at the iconic Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia.
Miller breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code, which addresses “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.” This infringement resulted in one demerit point being added to Miller’s disciplinary record since it was his first offense in 24 months. If a player accumulates four demerit points within 24 months, they face a ban from either 1 Test match or 2 ODIs/2 T20Is under ICC regulations.
In the 19th over of South Africa’s innings, the incident unfolded dramatically. Facing a full toss from England’s Sam Curran, Miller anticipated a ‘no ball’ due to its height. However, when the umpire did not make the call, Miller openly displayed dissent by signaling for a review, unaware that this decision could not be challenged.
Admitting to the offense, Miller promptly accepted the sanction proposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The charge was issued by on-field umpires Chris Brown and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, supported by third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth umpire Chris Gaffaney.
Under ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum fine of up to 50 percent of a player’s match fee. Furthermore, one or two demerit points may be added to the player’s disciplinary record.
This reprimand serves as a crucial reminder for Miller and underscores the importance of maintaining discipline and showing respect for umpire decisions in the intense arena of international cricket. South Africa, however won the match by seven runs and almost confirmed their way to the semifinal. They will play West Indies in their final Super 8 match.
