Rebel Wilson Reveals She Once Had Malaria After Waking Up with '100 Mosquito Bites on My Face'
Rebel Wilson is opening up about one of the serious downfalls about growing up in Australia.
In a new interview, the 44-year-old Pitch Perfect actress revealed that she has a major phobia of bugs, which all stems from when she contracted malaria as a teenager.
Keep reading to find out more…“I have always had bugs-xiety … [since] growing up in Australia, where we have a lot of bugs,” Rebel told Us Weekly. “But also, one of the biggest turning points, when I was 18, I got malaria. I woke up one morning in an African bush and I had like 100 mosquito bites on my face.”
“I was in hospital for two weeks,” Rebel continued. “I could have died from it, it was very, very bad.”
According to the CDC, malaria is a serious disease caused by a parasite that infects a certain type of mosquito. Those with malaria may experience flu-like symptoms, like fever, chills, headaches, and nausea. However, if “not treated right away, the infection can become serious. It may cause kidney failure, seizures, mental confusion, coma, and death.”
Rebel went on to say that mosquitos aren’t the only bugs she dislikes, adding, “I also remember being in my mom’s house, and they’d always have little flying gnats around the fruit bowl and I always hated it.”
“I don’t want any little bugs crawling around at home, especially after having a baby,” Rebel said, referring to 19-month-old daughter Royce, whom she shares with fiancée Ramona Agruma.
