Sports Briefs: Tam baseball coach Bernstein resigns

Nathan Bernstein announced on social media Saturday that he has resigned as baseball head coach at Tamalpais High. Bernstein wrote in his statement that he and his wife are moving to Pasadena to be closer to family.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision, one that has been coming for a long time, but I have continually pushed back because of how much the players, this program, and school have meant to me,” wrote Bernstein, who has guided the Red-tailed Hawks for the past nine seasons, racking up a 134-76 record.

Knicks bust out at home

The Novato Knicks celebrated their first home game of the Norm Thompson Pacific Baseball League season with a 12-3 victory over TKB College on Saturday at San Marin High. The game was the first half of a scheduled doubleheader. results from the second game were unavailable at deadline.

The Knicks’ Max Shabestari and Adrian Ruiz, teammates at Sonoma State, hit back-to-back doubles to open the fourth inning and tie the game, 3-3. College of Marin slugger Chris Delangis followed with a one-out double to center to bring Ruiz across for the winning run. The Knicks scored five more runs as they batted around in the inning. Novato added runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

Lefthander Elijah Aguilar took the mound in relief in the second inning for the Knicks, and scattered one run and four hits with a cannon arm to pick up the win. He struck out three batters and walked only one.

Shabestari finished the matinee game 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, while Ruiz doubled and scored twice. College of Marin powerhouse Skylar Lenihan hit a solo shot over the left field fence to kick off his day, going 3-for-3 at the plate, with two runs and three RBIs. Former College of Marin standout Benny Nazario was 2-for-4 with a run, while Sonoma State’s Brandon Herter was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
