Jason Mraz Talks Coming Out Late, Being Closeted in the 90s, & How He's Never Been in Love
Jason Mraz is getting very personal about his sexuality and love life in a new interview.
The 47-year-old “I’m Yours” singer came out as bisexual back in 2018, when he was married to ex-wife Christina Carano. He was also married to Sheridan Edley for one year back in 2000.
Jason said back then, “I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife. It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay?’ And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman.”
Now, Jason is reflecting on his sexuality, being closeted in the 90s, and how he’s never actually been in love.

Jason opened up on the latest episode of Sony Music Entertainment’s Dinner’s On Me Podcast, hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Here’s what he had to share:
On being closeted in the 90s: “In the 90s, being gay was like punchline of a joke and I didn’t want to be the punchline of a joke and kept my nose down and figured out ways I could instead get out and see the world one day.”
On not being in love yet: “Even to have been a late bloomer to where I am now, honestly, I feel like my life is just starting… I can’t say that I have found love yet. I have been in amazing relationships and I’ve always learned and grown and hopefully I don’t have bad karma woven through those relationships but I love where I am and I feel so much love for myself finally that can only enhance the next relationship or yeah or a relationship when I find one.”
On being sexually inexperienced: “My experiences are few, whereas other people my age might be more experienced, that’s all.”
On liking short relationships: “I don’t know if that’s a bad thing, maybe society frowns upon it, but I like a short relationship… They can end well, and many of mine have ended so well that it leaves me filled with hope that I can continue to have meaningful, loving relationships.”
On not seeing children in his future: “I had never seen that in my story and it might be because my parents split and I never saw that.”
