The deal was seemingly completed rather swiftly, with Tottenham swooping in to pay £40m for the 18-year-old after Leeds’ negotiations with Brentford collapsed in the final stages (Sky Sports).
The teenager won many admirers with his impressive displays in the Championship last term and according to various reports, he has been promised game time next season, with Ange Postecoglou’s men primarily viewing him as a midfielder rather than a right-back (The Athletic).

Some might feel that £40m is a steep price to pay for a player who has just one good season in the Championship but Gold has now explained that Tottenham are convinced of the youngster’s potential to thrive on the biggest stage.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel about the signing of Gray: “Some people are questioning why you would spend so much on a young player because he could be amazing. He could be absolutely fantastic.
“It says it all about how much faith there is in this transfer. Everyone I have spoken to in the game has said he’s a top, top talent, the one they think is going to be the next huge thing in English football.”

By all accounts, Brentford were also willing to pay £40m for Gray and the deal only collapsed due to disagreements over the structure of payments.
That shows just how highly rated the 18-year-old is in the game as the Bees are not big spenders and do not tend to take too many gambles in the market.
