Nelson’s most recent position at the College of Marin was vice president of operations.

The Peralta district, which is in Alameda County, includes Berkeley City College, the College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College. The district says it serves about 30,000 students a year.

SAN RAFAEL

Stabbing suspect
pleads not guilty

A San Rafael man charged with trying to kill a woman during a family argument has pleaded not guilty.

Walenton Deleon-Diaz, 26, allegedly stabbed the victim on June 25 at an apartment on Fairfax Street in the Canal neighborhood, police said. When police confronted him outside the apartment, he allegedly indicated he was carrying a knife.

An officer shot Deleon-Diaz with a 40-millimeter sponge round. Police arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, making a criminal threat and obstructing police.

Deleon-Diaz entered the plea Wednesday. Deleon-Diaz’s defense attorney, Thomas Brown, and prosecutor Daniel Madow declined to comment on the case after the hearing.

Judge Kelly Simmons has scheduled the next hearing for Aug. 5.
