Mets Bullpen Allows Seven Runs in Loss to Pirates

The pitching performance wasn’t great from the Mets in their series opener in Pittsburgh.

It started with Luis Severino, who was credited with seven earned runs and exited the game in the seventh inning with the bases loaded. The bullpen followed with a lackluster performance, and was the nail-in-the-coffin for the Mets as the bullpen gave up a combined seven earned runs on seven hits and four home runs.

Jake Diekman’s struggles continued on Friday night when he gave up an earned run on two hits including a home run and one walk before being replaced before even getting an out. In 37 games (26 2/3 innings) pitched, Diekman is 2-3 with three saves and a 5.06 ERA. He has given up one or more earned runs in four of his last five starts.

Diekman then turned the ball over to Ty Adcock who could not get out of trouble either. Adcock threw 1 2/3 inning and gave up six of the seven earned runs given up by the bullpen, including five hits, three homers, and two walks.

Adcock has appeared in just three games for the Mets since being claimed off waivers from Detroit in May and called up to New York at the end of June. His first two relief appearances were solid as he gave up just one hit on June 29 and a hit and earned run on July 3. However Friday night against the Pirates he could not get out of trouble.

With the struggles by the bullpen and the Pirates taking a 14-2 game to the eighth, the Mets became the next victim of a position player pitching on the mound with Luis Torrens. That was Torrens’ first time being brought in to pitch.

Friday was another game the Mets’ bullpen put the game out of reach. The offense, who had a tall task with Paul Skenes, never got a chance at a comeback as the bullpen allowed seven runs in the last three innings of the game.

Diekman was once again in the middle of the bullpen drama on Friday. Carlos Mendoza spoke on Diekman’s struggles against the Pirates.

“He’s going through a very rough stretch right now,” stated Mendoza. “Either he gets ahead or having a hard time putting hitters away… The fastball velo isn’t there right now. Our job is to get him back on track,” said Mendoza. “Obviously he’s going

through it right now and it’s hard. He’s done it before. He’s been in this league for a long time and he’ll get through it,” he said.
