Blue-green algae bloom present in Pittsfield's Pontoosuc Lake
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) -- The city of Pittsfield has announced that recent observations have confirmed the presence of a blue-green algae bloom in Pontoosuc Lake. The city says this bloom may have harmful health effects for lake users.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has recommended issuing a public health advisory. The city gave a list of guidelines to keep safe:
- Do not swim, dive, play, wade, or do any activities in the water
- Do not swallow the water
- Keep animals away
- Rinse after contact with water
Warning signs will be posted around the lake. These microscopic organisms, known as blue-green algae blooms or Cyanobacteria, can cause health outcomes like irritation of the skin, eyes, or ears, gastrointestinal problems, muscle cramps, and in extreme cases, nerve or liver problems.
Anyone experiencing symptoms of blue-green algae exposure should contact their health care provider or call poison control at (800) 222-1222. If your pets experience symptoms, contact the veterinarian immediately.
