Morning Briefing: Kodai Senga Hopes to Return Next Week

Good morning, Mets fans!

Kodai Senga has been continuing to rehab his calf injury and over the past couple of weeks more reports have been leaning towards a possible return this season. Senga himself told reporters that he hopes to get in a Triple-A game this weekend and potentially return next week, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Senga said he’s been “working his tail off” and that “he needs to make this work.”

The 31-year-old pitcher suffered a high-grade left calf strain in his first start of the season on July 26, after missing the first half of the season with a right posterior shoulder capsule strain. Senga has worked hard to return but made sure to mention that he will not come back until he is 100% ready.

The Mets took care of business again on Wednesday night, walloping the Nationals by a score of 10-0. The Mets’ bats were ready to play last night, breaking out for nine runs in the fourth inning, which was capped off by a three-run bomb from Brandon Nimmo. The Mets are now up two games on the Atlanta Braves after sweeping the Nationals and Atlanta losing two of three to Cincinnati.

New York will now play a four-game set against the Phillies starting on Thursday. Luis Severino (3.77 ERA, 10-6) will face former Met Taijuan Walker (6.29 ERA, 3-6) at 7:15 p.m. ET at Citi Field.
