Rễ Cây
Rễ Cây is a minimalist lighting collection created by New York City-based designer Steffany Trần, a Vietnamese-American industrial designer and ceramic artist—and the founder of Vy Voi. The collection was presented at this year’s inaugural edition of COLLECTIBLE New York. The name, which translates to “root” in Vietnamese, reflects the central theme of balance between opposites: the weightless and the grounded. This collection, Steffany’s second, features five distinct lights: Sắn, Cà-rốt, Củ Cải, Khoai Môn, and Củ Đậu. The collection explores contrasts in form, material, and proportion, resulting in pieces that feel both light and solid. From a distance, the lampshades seem to grow from their bases, echoing the concept of roots. Up close, a blend of soft forms and natural textures emerges, offering a more intimate experience of the design. Each lamp features a hand-thrown porcelain base, giving it a solid foundation, while the large Dó paper lampshades introduce a delicate, lightweight element.
Dó paper, made from the bark of the Dó tree in Bắc Ninh, Việt Nam, has been used for over 800 years and is known for its durability and unique texture. By incorporating this historic material into a modern design, Vy Voi aims to preserve the tradition of Dó paper while reimagining its use in contemporary lighting. The texture of the paper, with visible bits of bark, gives each lamp a distinct character, inviting users to appreciate the contrast between the organic paper and the smooth porcelain base. The collection’s design emphasizes simplicity and refinement, with each light standing on its own or working as part of a larger composition. The Rễ Cây collection aims to highlight the potential of traditional materials in modern design, with Trần expressing her admiration for Dó paper’s unique qualities. By reintroducing this material in a contemporary context, Vy Voi hopes to showcase Vietnamese heritage while encouraging its continued use in future design.
