Stats show Spurs are most difficult Premier League side to defend against
Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking stats so far this season are extremely impressive, with Ange Postecoglou’s men outdoing the other 19 Premier League sides in a number of key metrics.
Spurs have improved significantly
While Tottenham have not managed to get as many wins as they would have wanted this season, they have dominated in almost every one of their games this season.
That is certainly evident in their attacking metrics, with Ange Postecoglou’s men in a league of their own when it comes to the attacking threat they pose and the number of chances they create each game.
Tottenham’s eye-watering numbers
Premierleague.com did a deep dive on Spurs’ metrics (prior to the clash against Crystal Palace) and the numbers clearly show that the Lilywhites are the most difficult side to defend against.
Tottenham have the highest expected goals (xG) as well as the most non-penalty xG (NPxG) so far this season, with the latter standing at 16.95, which is 2.09 greater than the side ranked in second.
Spurs are averaging 2.11 NPxG per game, which is an increase of more than 10 per cent on their average at this stage last season.
Tottenham have also posted an NPxG figure at least twice as big as the opposition in each of their wins, which shows that they are not just beating teams but destroying them.
They are averaging 61.9 per cent possession per game, which is second only to Manchester City while they are also only behind the Premier League champions when it comes to touches in the opposition box.
Spurs let down by their finishing
However, despite averaging more than two goals per game so far this season, Tottenham have actually not been very clinical in front of goal.
They only converted nine of the 29 big chances they created in their first eight league games, which puts their big-chance conversion rate at 31.03 per cent.
If the numbers are anything to go by, the Lilywhites will be impossible to stop if they can improve their finishing.
