Interfering Yankee Fans Banned from Game 5
The two Yankee fans who interfered with Mookie Betts in Game 4 of the World Series “will not be permitted to attend tonight’s game in any capacity,” according to a Yankees statement released Wednesday.
Austin Capobianco successfully pried the ball out of Betts’ glove after he made a catch in foul territory and John Peter grabbed Betts’ throwing hand by the wrist. Gleyber Torres, who hit the ball, was ruled out because of fan interference.
The fans were ejected for what the Yankees called “egregious and unacceptable physical contact” in the statement.
“The safety and security of players, fans and Stadium staff is the foundational element of every event held at Yankee Stadium, and it cannot be compromised,” the statement said.
It was not clear if the fans would face more penalties.
“When it comes to the person in play, it doesn’t matter,” Betts said about the incident after the game. “We lost. It’s irrelevant. I’m fine. He’s fine. Everything’s cool. We lost the game and that’s what I’m kind of focused on.”
