Morning Briefing: Yankees Keep Season Alive With 11-4 Victory

Good morning, Mets fans!

Fueled by a power display from Anthony Volpe and Gleyber Torres, the Yankees kept their season alive with an 11-4 victory against the Dodgers. Los Angeles had started UConn alumnus Ben Casparius as an opener for their bullpen game, and Dave Roberts stayed true to his word, not using a single high-leverage reliever. With the lopsided scoreline, it seems impossible that the Dodgers once had a chance, but they actually struck first via a first-inning Freddie Freeman homer. It was his sixth straight World Series game with a home run, breaking a major league record.

The Yankees, however, would not take their feet off the gas pedal, hammering Daniel Hudson in the third, stringing together hard hits against Landon Knack (despite his forgiving stat line) and putting the hammer down with a five-run inning in the bottom of the eighth.

Now, the Yankees will player another must-win game in New York. Dodgers righty Jack Flaherty (1-2, 6.10 ERA in postseason) will face off against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (1-0, 2.82 ERA). The last time these two took the mound, which was in Game 1, the Dodgers came out on top with a 6-3 win in 10 innings. Cole did everything he could to prevent a Yankees loss, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out four. To continue their potential comeback, the Yankees desperately need their ace to step up again.

The Mets have announced that tickets are on sale now for Amazin’ Day. As of now, the date is set for Jan. 25, 2025, and it will run from 9:30 a.m. ET to 6:30 p.m. Events in the fan fest can include behind the scene tours, player meet and greets, acquiring Mets merch and more.

As Royals veteran catcher Salvador Perez earned the Roberto Clemente award, former Mets starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco, driven by his friendship with Perez, bought his own tickets to the Clemente Award presentation in order to honor his friend.

Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor took to Instagram to thank the Mets fanbase. “Thank you Mets Nation for pushing me everyday,” he said. He would sign his short letter with a “Mr. Smile.”

Will Venable will be the new manager of the Chicago White Sox, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reported last night.

Previously, Bob Nightengale of USA Today had reported that the White Sox had determined their list of three managerial candidates. Venable, Craig Albernaz and former Angels manager Phil Nevin were among Chicago’s finalists. Nightengale noted that the Miami Marlins were also considering Venable and Albernaz for their managerial vacancy.

In a press release, the Milwaukee Brewers announced that pitching coach Chris Hook will return for the 2025 season. He is said to be “an invaluable asset” by Brewers senior vice president Matt Arnold. Hook’s been in the organization for 17 years already and was finally appointed to be the pitching coach six years ago.
