Will it snow in the UK this November? Met Office gives its verdict

As winter approaches, you may be wondering if we’ll have snow this November.

For now the days are relatively mild, with sunny days sprinkled with cloud and rain.

Unsurprisingly Scotland and the north of England are having a windier time than the rest of the country, even if mist and fog may reach further south.

Mist and fog may fall on otherwise mild, if windy, days this week as much of the country experiences sunny spells.

If you’ve been holding out for a white Christmas come early, you may have got your hopes up for some snow to fall in the coming days – at least in the Scottish Highlands around Inverness.

An earlier Met Office forecast for the first week of November said: ‘Into the start of November, there is a chance the weather could (briefly) turn much colder/brighter, with a chance of snow showers in northern and eastern areas, but it’s equally possible these could stay clear of the UK, or the milder conditions could remain in place.’

While it’s not ruled out entirely, it does seem that the snow is giving the UK a miss for now.

Conditions are predicted to stay settled into the weekend, the Met Office said.

‘However it will remain cloudy, particularly across the south with patchy drizzle in places. Bright or sunny spells developing more widely on Sunday.’

It’s looking like that will continue for the first week of two of November.

The Met Office predicts: ‘High pressure is likely to dominate the weather across many parts of the UK during this period.

‘This will mean plenty of dry and settled weather for most, although it may be fairly cloudy at times. Where skies clear overnight some areas of fog and frost are likely to develop.

‘Southern areas are expected to be mainly dry during this period, while any more unsettled conditions and periods of rain are more likely to affect areas further north, particularly the north and northwest of Scotland.

‘Winds will likely be light in the south, but there could be some spells of strong winds across the north and west. Temperatures will probably be close to normal overall, although some cold nights are possible at times.’

Even as the weather starts to change and temperatures drop later in the month, it’s not looking like there will be any snow just yet.

For the period from November 13 to November 27, the forecaster predicts: ‘After a relatively settled start to November, around mid-month there will probably be a change toward more unsettled conditions for a time.

‘This means an increased risk of periods of wet and windy weather for parts of the UK, perhaps more so in the south.

‘However, there is low confidence whether unsettled, wetter weather or drier and more settled conditions will dominate by the end of the month.

‘Temperatures will probably be close to average overall, although some colder interludes are possible.’
