Two Afghan citizens executed in Iran
In response to international calls to halt executions in Iran, the human rights organization Hengaw reported the execution of five individuals, including two Afghan citizens, at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, Iran.
The organization, in a report published on Friday, January 10, stated that the executions were carried out by Ghezel Hesar authorities on Wednesday, last week.
According to the report, these individuals were convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to death by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The human rights organization identified one of the executed Afghan citizens as “Amanullah Tajik.”
This comes amid increasing criticism from human rights organizations regarding the rising number of executions in Iran, with repeated calls to end this practice.
Recently, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed deep concern over the sharp rise in executions in Iran and urged the country to stop the “wave of executions.”
According to UN statistics, the number of executions in Iran increased to 901 in 2024, marking the highest figure in 15 years.
Reports indicate that most executions in Iran are linked to crimes such as drug trafficking, premeditated murder, sexual assault, and politically related charges.
The “Death Penalty Information Center” reported that Iran topped the global list with 882 documented executions in 2024.
The continued rise in executions highlights the urgent need for international advocacy and diplomatic efforts to address human rights concerns in Iran. Governments and global organizations must work collectively to promote fair trials and alternative approaches to justice.
Fostering dialogue and engagement with Iranian authorities on human rights issues, alongside consistent international pressure, can pave the way for systemic reforms. This would ensure a more humane and equitable justice system in the country.
