‘Five fighting for life’ after tram crash at Strasbourg station leaves at least 50 injured as smoke fills tunnel

AT least five people are reportedly fighting for life and dozens more are injured after two trams collided at a station in France.

Chaotic footage shows people breaking the doors of a tram to pull passengers out of the carriages after the horror crash at Strasbourg-Ville station.

People can be heard screaming as smoke filled the underground tunnel station after the accident.

Another video appears to show the two trams on the platform, with both their front and rear ends smashed up.

René Cellier, director of the fire and rescue service, said at least 50 passengers were injured in the crash, French outlet Actu17 reports.

Around 100 people were on the two trams at the time.

The collision is thought to have been caused by one of the trams accidentally switched tracks before hitting a second tram that was stopped at the station.

One of the trams is reported to have derailed after the accident and an investigation into the cause is underway.

Cops confirmed that tram traffic through the main station has been interrupted “following a tram accident”.

Bas-Rhin Fire and Rescue Service said: “Tram accident at the Gare Centrale stop at Strasbourg. Numerous resources were mobilised.

“Avoid the areas of Place des Halles, Gare, Boulevard du Président Wilson and facilitate access for emergency services.”

Pierre Jakubowicz, a councillor in Strasbourg, posted: “Majo tram collision at Strasbourg station.

“Support and recognition for the emergency services mobilised and all my thoughts for the injured.”

Strasbourg-ville is the main railway station in the city of Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin, France.
