Los Angeles Wildfires: At least 11 dead and 10,000 buildings destroyed

The flames of two massive wildfires threatening Los Angeles from the east and west remain uncontrolled, causing widespread devastation. These fires have claimed at least 11 lives and destroyed over 10,000 buildings. The severity of the crisis has forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate.

The “Palisades” fire in western Los Angeles and the “Eaton” fire in the east are considered among the most destructive wildfires in the city’s history. Together, they have scorched over 34,000 hectares, reducing entire neighborhoods to ashes.

The economic damage caused by this crisis has been estimated at $20 billion by insurance companies. This staggering figure reflects the scale of the disaster. U.S. President Joe Biden has declared a national disaster and pledged to cover cleanup costs and first responders’ salaries for 180 days.

Robert Luna, Los Angeles County Sheriff, compared the wildfires to “atomic bombs” and warned that the death toll could rise. The Eaton fire alone has destroyed or severely damaged thousands of structures, highlighting its devastating impact.

In another part of the disaster, the Palisades fire has also caused significant destruction. Local officials reported that over 5,300 structures in the area have been completely destroyed. Challenging weather conditions and strong winds have made firefighting efforts more difficult.

Marone, a senior Los Angeles fire department official, stated that the spread of the Eaton fire has been significantly slowed. The once-powerful winds, which had reached speeds of 160 kilometers per hour, have diminished, allowing critical aerial support for ground teams.

In a more hopeful development, firefighting teams successfully contained the “Sunset” fire, which had led to mandatory evacuations in areas such as Hollywood. With the fire under control, evacuation orders for these areas were lifted.

These massive wildfires once again emphasize the importance of preparedness and proactive measures against natural disasters. Containing this catastrophe and rebuilding the affected areas will require continuous collaboration between the government, the public, and international organizations.
