4 Queer TV Shows That Should’ve Never Been Canceled
Queer representation in TV and movies can be hard to find, but we are seeing an increase in all categories of the rainbow on our screens.
Everywhere I turn, there are unexpected moments in TV and film that warm my little queer heart. While I am happy at the increase, I can’t help but feel sad for all of the fallen shows that never got the airtime they deserved. Here are 4 queer shows that should’ve never been canceled prematurely.
First Kill
First Kill is a Netflix series that only lasted one season even though it had a ton of promise. First Kill is based on a short story that follows a teenage vampire who is forced to make her first kill in order to join her family legacy of vampires. Her eyes are set on another girl who just so happens to be a descendant of a long line of vampire hunters. Forbidden love! Unfortunately despite a large lesbian fan base, First Kill was canceled quickly after season one was released.
Gentleman Jack
From 2019 to 2022, Gentleman Jack was a fan favorite period piece on HBO. The series is based on the LGBTQ+ icon, Anne Lister, and her diaries. Lister’s life is put on display as she is a landowner destined to save her family home and make it into high-society. One of the ways she can do that is marry well, but Lister doesn’t intend to marry a man. 1832 wasn’t kind to queer relationships, so we love an Industrial Revolution same-sex couple.
Glamorous
Glamorous had an extremely short run, also only lasting one season on Netflix. Glamorous, starring Miss Benny and Kim Cattrall. Miss Benny plays Marco Meija, a gender non-conforming queer man as he is recruited by the top supermodel of the world to work at her cosmetic company. Cattrall is Madolyn Addison, the supermodel and cosmetic company owner. The show was fun, lighthearted, and cute, featuring lesbian and other queer characters.
Our Flag Means Death
Our Flag Means Death ran from 2022-2023 and was officially canceled after two seasons, which seems to be par for the course with queer shows.This show was a fan favorite and followed the hilarious adventures of pirate Stede Bonnet and his crew as they sailed the seas trying to make a solid name for themselves as pirates. The crew has a brief run-in with Blackbeard and the two leading men of the show have a relationship aboard the ship. Our Flag Means Death has plenty of representation, including non-binary and transmasc characters that made it such a delight to watch.
