Extreme heat warning and heat advisory issued for parts of New York
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- An extreme heat warning and heat advisory have been issued for New York by the National Weather Service.
Forecasters have issued the warning for the five boroughs, Westchester, and the Hudson Valley starting from noon Sunday through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Dangerously hot conditions with a heat index of up to 110 are expected, according to the NWS.
An extreme heat warning means that the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel like 105 degrees or greater.
The extreme heat warning comes a day after New York was under an extreme heat watch, while Newark, New Jersey, issued a code red.
A heat advisory has been issued for Long Island and will remain in effect from Sunday at noon through Tuesday at 8 p.m. Under the advisory, heat indexes of up to 99 are expected.
Long Island will also remain under an extreme heat watch from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening.
Forecasters warn that heat illnesses are possible in the coming days, with seniors and people with chronic health problems being most at risk.
To protect against the heat, health experts recommend the following.
How to beat the heat:
- Use an air conditioner or fan if available
- Stay out of the sun
- Wear lightweight, bright or light-colored clothing to reflect some of the sun’s energy
- Drink fluids, especially water, even if you do not feel thirsty
- Eat small, frequent meals
- Avoid strenuous activity, especially during the sun’s peak hours
- Never leave children or pets in a car
- Close window shades or curtains
- Try not to use your stove and oven
- Take a cool shower or bath
- Avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar
- Put a hat on to protect your face and head
