'Not crying wolf': NYC animal shelter runs out of space
NEW YORK (PIX11) – A New York City animal shelter has suspended pet surrenders after running out of space for animals.
"We have never had this many animals in our care before. This isn’t a drill. This is a crisis," the Animal Care Centers of NYC wrote on its Facebook page. "We’re not crying wolf — we’re crying for help."
It’s the first time in Animal Care Centers of NYC's 30-year history that it has announced it can no longer take in any more pets. The shelter said it has room for 185 dogs but is over capacity with 350 dogs, with some being kept in crates in hallways and offices.
The shelter will still accept animals from the NYPD or other city agencies, but needs families to adopt to open space before being able to handle any more admissions from private drop-offs.
Any animal adopted at ACC will be spayed or neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated. Adoption fees start at just $25.
