A 36-year-old man from Matobo, Matabeleland South province has been jailed for 15 years by Gwanda Magistrate’s Court for waylaying and raping a 13-year-old juvenile last month.
The man chased after the victim while on his bicycle after seeing her coming from a friend’s home where they had been discussing homework from school.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the offence was committed on 8 June this year around 3pm.
“The victim went to a friend’s homestead to do some homework and whilst on her way back home, she met the offender who started chasing her with a bicycle until he caught up with her,” said the NPAZ.
“The offender pushed the victim and she fell on the ground facing upwards and then he sat on top of her. She screamed for help and the offender produced a knife threatening to kill her.”
He then removed her clothes and raped the victim before fleeing from the scene on his bicycle.
The girl went on and reported the ordeal to her parents, who informed the police, leading to the man’s arrest.
“This case highlights the importance of creating safe spaces for children to speak and ensuring that they are protected, especially within homes and communities. Justice begins with listening and acting. Let’s break the silence and stand up for the safety and dignity of every child,” said the NPAZ.
